Labor Instructions:
Required Labor: 102 minutes (10 minutes): Watch clip on Jay-Z and Hip-Hop twice (up until 1:22): http://people.com/celebrity/jay-z-hip-hop-has-done-more-for-racial-relations-than-most-cultural-icons/
(10 minutes): Watch and read lyrics of Jay-Z's song, "Somewhere in America" twice: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-wlna-O9zvc
(10 minutes): You will notice that many Muslim women who write about hijab are responding to Islamophobia. To better understand their music and lyrics then, we need to take a moment to consider the Islamophobia they are up against. We are bombarded with Islamophobic content everyday, sometimes multiple times a day. I want you to take a moment and think about all the stereotypes you’ve heard about Muslim women and the hijab-- the practice of covering oneself modestly. These are not your beliefs. They are the things that society imposes on consumers on a daily basis. These can be from comments you’ve heard from friends, family, that you’ve read in books, or seen at bus-stops, seen in films, etc. Make a list of all the stereotypes you have noticed associated with the hijab. (25 minutes): “Somewhere in America (Mipsterz)” https://vimeo.com/79645532
(37 minutes): Mona Haydar: Hijabi (Wrap my Hijab) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XOX9O_kVPeo
If you have time left over in your 102 minutes, watch this video and think about it as well (no need to take notes): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uV5lqaB3R4Q [Listen to it with captions on so you can follow the lyrics]
